Mother's Helper
The Shady Grove Pregnancy Center's Parenting Program provides educational and material assistance to first time mothers. Four times a year we host a seven-week series of pregnancy classes. Professionals from the area come to teach on topics such as labor and delivery, nutrition, finances, etc. Family members, especially fathers are also invited to participate.
There are many ways to become one of our "mother's helpers". Listed below are a few examples:
Prepare a Meal
At the beginning of each pregnancy class a light nutritious meal is provided. Meals are usually made for a group of 15 to 20 people.
- In the spring/summer season, the meal consists of salad, sandwiches, chips and dip, yogurt and/or fruit.
- In the fall/winter season, the meal consists of soup, sandwich, chips, and/or fruit or dessert.
Mother's Shower
Have a shower and donate the items to our "soon-to-be mothers." It is a perfect way to meet some of the material needs of the mothers as well as their babies. Suggested items are:
- Maternity Clothes - including new maternity bras, hose, etc.
- Breast pumps - brand name: Evenflo Comfort Select Automatic
- Boppy pillows for breast feeding
- Personal journal to write in
- Crib sheets
- Receiving blankets
- Newborn bath towels
- Infant bath tubs
- Newborn clothes - girls & boys
- Onesies for girls & boys sizes 3 to 12 months old
- Lightweight strollers for infants like the Graco brand Metrolite
Mentor Mom
Some first time mothers need a mentor. A mentor is an experienced mother who comes along side of the new mother to give emotional support. She is a positive role model who gives practical advice. Counselor training is required. A time commitment of 1 year is necessary with a weekly involvement of 4 hours.
